Just inland from the secluded harbour of Saldanha Bay, and only 1,5 hour’s drive from Cape Town’s City Centre, one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park.
St Helena Bay – Whale Watching
One amazing thing about the area between Dassen Island and St Helena Bay is that it seems that some individuals of both species may be present here throughout summer, and not join the majority of whales on their summer migration to Antarctic water. This is certainly worth further investigation.
Saldanha Bay – Doc’s Caves
Legend has it that there are two stories behind this name. 1. An Irish gentlemen lived in the cave round 1845, at the time when “White Gold” (Guano) was collected off the island in the bay. 2. An old medical doctor stayed in the cave, at the time of the great Quarantine. From the case he treated the patients who were banned from setting foot on land.
Fossil Park
Visit the West Coast Fossil Park close to Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa. See the fossils of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes and the many other exotic animals which inhabited the west coast area some 5 million years ago.

Helmed by Michelin-starred French chef Yohann Suire and his South African wife, LaRetha Venter, this culinary collaboration amalgamates West Coast ingredients with French execution – think classic mouclade made with mussels sourced in neighbouring Saldanha Bay. Located in the historic Farmhouse Hotel in Langebaan, La Petite Maison’s menu is not its only drawcard: a sprawling verandah overlooks the lagoon, while inside a double-volume space replete with fireplace and thatched eaves offers respite on winter nights.
